We work closely with a number of local authorities including Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Wakefield. A good example of the good work we do in conjunction with a LA is the Sheffield Guarantee.
General Teaching Council (Teacher Learning Academy)
Sheffield Hallam has been closely involved in the development of the GTC's Teacher Learning Academy (TLA) during the last three years with over 350 teachers engaged with us in developing their portfolios for both academic credit and membership of the TLA. A number of Sheffield Hallam staff are trained verifiers for the TLA and we work with both the GTC and our partner local authorities in supporting the deployment of new strategies such as the recent innovation of TLA hub schools.
National College for School Leadership
NCSL (opens new window) provides professional support for school leaders at every stage in their career. Major programmes include Leading from the Middle, National Professional Qualification for Headship, and the Leadership Programme for Serving Headteachers and the national Professional Qualification for Integrated Centre Leadership. Our provision works alongside these programmes allowing for a variety of ways for you to gain credit for your study on a leadership programme.
Our professional development programme includes modules which allow colleagues to gain Masters level academic credit for the learning that they have achieved through NCSL courses such as Leading from the Middle and the National Professional Qualification for Headship.
In partnership with CCDU, Leaders and Sheffield authorities we also deliver the NCSL's NPQICL programme for Children's Centre Leaders in Yorkshire and Humberside. Our research team have been contracted to evaluate the process.
The Sheffield Guarantee has CPD at its heart.
Its aim is to support the recruitment and retention of staff in Sheffield schools, give them recognition for their achievements, and support their aspirations and career progression.
The Sheffield Guarantee is underpinned by several key strands that are fundamental to Sheffield's commitment to:
- Provide a framework for CPD of all school-based staff throughout their careers.
- Promote high quality teaching and learning through recognised and accredited professional development.
- Promote Sheffield a place to live and learn.
Teachers and support staff in Sheffield can expect encouragement from their Children and Young People's Directorate to engage in a range of opportunities to develop personally and professionally in their careers. The Opportunities Framework for teaching and support staff outline progression routes and qualifications which support professional development and practice for all roles within the school team at any stage of their careers, including Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs), Recently Qualified Teachers (RQTs), experienced practitioners and those aspiring to, or who are already in, leadership positions within their chosen career.
Used strategically as part of the school's Single Integrated Development Planning and performance management systems, the Sheffield Guarantee is seen as an effective tool for raising achievement and driving school improvement.
